Nestled in Bossley Park, Sydney, Where Heart Meets History is a residential renovation that celebrates colour, character, and the enduring charm of a family home. Designed by Tayla Manca of Interior Idealist, the project transformed the home's Main Bathroom and Guest Bathroom into warm, expressive spaces that feel deeply personal to the young family who live there.
Rather than stripping away the existing character of the home, Tayla’s vision was to honour its history while introducing a softer, more contemporary aesthetic. Through thoughtful material selections, layered textures, and a peach-inspired palette, the renovation strikes a beautiful balance between old and new.
Brought to life by builder George Mannah of Olive Branch Renovations, the project combined detailed design documentation with skilled craftsmanship to ensure every finish, fixture, and design detail reflected the original vision.
A Story Inspired by Colour
The design journey began during the initial site visit, when the clients shared their desire to incorporate colour into the bathrooms. Their love of soft pink and peach tones became the catalyst for the entire design concept.
From there, Tayla developed a layered and textural scheme that balanced warmth with character. Apricot-toned tiles became the hero material, complemented by timber-look cabinetry, brushed gold finishes, and tactile details throughout the space.
“A key part of the design was preserving the heritage feel of the home while introducing the clients’ personal style,” says Tayla. “The result is a bathroom renovation that feels personal, expressive, and full of heart.”
Heritage Charm Meets Contemporary Warmth
Tayla describes the project as a blend of heritage character and contemporary warmth. Rather than creating a bathroom that felt overtly modern, her focus was on crafting spaces rich in texture, colour, and personality.
The soft apricot palette became the focal point of both bathrooms, while fluted glass introduced a sense of luxury and visual interest. Warm timber-look cabinetry and brushed gold tapware added depth and warmth, balanced by the texture and movement of terrazzo flooring.
Together, these carefully considered finishes create interiors that feel timeless, layered, and full of character.
Designing with Intention
For Tayla, selecting materials and finishes is one of the most important aspects of the design process. Every element must perform both aesthetically and practically, while contributing to the overall story of the space.
As the clients were already committed to incorporating apricot-toned tiles, the surrounding materials were selected to complement the feature rather than compete with it.
“I selected the basin, cabinetry, tapware, glass, and flooring to create balance, depth, and warmth around the feature tile,” she explains.
The goal was to allow each material to shine individually while still contributing to a cohesive whole, an approach that sits at the heart of Tayla’s design philosophy.
“I believe interiors should feel considered, layered, and personal.”
From Concept to Completion
The project followed a comprehensive design process, beginning with a detailed site measure and consultation to understand the existing space, the clients’ lifestyle, and their aspirations for the renovation.
From there, Tayla developed a client brief and mood board to refine the design direction, colour palette, and overall aesthetic. Detailed floor plans were then created to provide key measurements and information required for construction and trade coordination.
Material-rendered floor plans allowed finishes and selections to be tested visually before final decisions were made, while the final design package included an FF&E schedule, 3D models, and realistic imagery to communicate the completed vision.
“3D modelling and imagery were a major part of my process,” says Tayla. “They allowed both myself and the clients to see how the space would look before construction began, helping build confidence in the selections and overall design direction.”
The Power of Colour
Of all the elements within the project, colour remains Tayla’s favourite.
“The apricot tones became the heart of the design and helped create a bathroom that felt warm, expressive, and unique to the clients.”
For Tayla, the project demonstrates how colour can become one of the most desirable features within a home when thoughtfully balanced with texture, warmth, and complementary finishes.
“My advice would be not to be afraid of colour. When used with intention, it can completely transform a space and give it so much character.”
Why Nood Co?
From the very beginning, Tayla knew a concrete basin would provide the perfect focal point within the vanity area.
After seeing the clients’ chosen apricot-toned tile, she selected Nood Co’s Bowl Basin in Pastel Peach to complement the palette while introducing softness and sculptural form.
“The basin lightly contrasted with the tile while still feeling easy on the eye,” says Tayla. “It allowed both the tile and basin to have their own moment without overpowering each other.”
As the bathroom retained its traditional separated layout, the vanity became a key feature within the overall design. Positioned beneath a skylight, the Nood Co. basin naturally draws attention, becoming a centrepiece within the space.
The result is a thoughtful and distinctive design detail that feels seamlessly connected to the warmth and character of the home.
A Meaningful Milestone
While Where Heart Meets History is a beautiful renovation in its own right, it also marks an important milestone in Tayla’s professional journey.
She completed the project shortly after graduating as a 21-year-old interior designer, making it one of the first opportunities to fully explore her passion for colour, materiality, 3D modelling, documentation, and residential design.
“This project reflects the idea that colour can still feel timeless when balanced with the right materials, textures, and finishes,” says Tayla. “It was designed to feel warm, expressive, and connected to the character of the home, while still feeling personal to the clients.”
The result is a renovation that beautifully proves exactly that: where colour, history, and contemporary design come together to create a home filled with heart.
