South Coast Building Design Concepts by Gavin Hepper

Nestled in the seaside suburb of Shellharbour on the NSW South Coast, Breezeway House is a cohesive design story, one shaped by light, materiality and family life. Created by interior designer Gavin Hepper of Concepts by Gavin Hepper in collaboration with South Coast Building Design's Adam Roser, the home embodies a relaxed coastal lifestyle while embracing a rich and expressive material palette.

Designed as a forever home for a young family, Breezeway House balances open-plan living with moments of warmth, texture and retreat. Inspired by mid-century modern design principles and the easy rhythm of coastal living, the home tells a cohesive story through carefully curated materials, colour and craftsmanship.

A Home Shaped by Lifestyle

The design of this home was approached by lifestyle at the forefront, for modern, coastal and connected living.   Breezeway House is defined by its connection, from the living and entertaining areas connecting from the outside to in and outside again, the home flows and transitions from the front verandah through the kitchen, dining and living to the alfresco, fire pit and pool beyond.

A Story Told Through Materiality

Materiality plays a defining role throughout the home. While a neutral foundation provides a sense of calm, layers of colour, texture and natural finishes introduce personality and depth.

The kitchen serves as the heart of the home, designed to bring people together. A striking Emerald Green Quartzite island anchors the space, complemented by warm teak joinery and handmade Moroccan zellige tiles. Together, these elements create a palette that feels both enduring and expressive.

Throughout the home, green tones become a recurring thread, from Emerald Green Quartzite and Verdi Cristallo stone to Japanese glazed tiles and handcrafted concrete elements. Warm timber finishes and tactile materials soften the overall aesthetic, creating spaces that feel relaxed and effortless.

From Inspiration to Reality

The design journey began with two seemingly simple but highly influential references: an Ellison Studios ‘Float’ sofa upholstered in deep chocolate velvet and a vibrant Jai Vasicek artwork rich with verdant green tones.

This formed the start of the colour palette, taking cues from the external architecture and the home’s coastal location, the team explored a mid-century modern aesthetic. Based around their studio ethos incorporating fine furniture elements within our kitchen design, this incredible island, designed for gathering became the centre piece of the kitchen. Materiality then really started to play an integral role with the Japanese tiles being a hero, connecting the wet areas together.

Natural Beauty Meets Crafted Design

The inclusion of several Nood Co pieces throughout the home. The homeowners had specifically requested a statement green bath for the main bathroom, making our Nood Co. Juno bath a natural choice. Its bold presence and tactile finish perfectly complements the home's layered material palette.

From there, the Mill basin in the powder room and the Pill basin in Rowboat were coordinated into the spaces.

The Feeling of Home

While the home is filled with beautiful details and carefully considered design moments, its true achievement lies in how it makes you feel.

"The feeling of walking into this home and just being within it - it's pure joy."
