Rathmines House was a result of collaboration between Ben Callery Architects, BuildHer Collective, Beirin Projects, R&Co Design Studio and Alison Lewis Interiors. Nestled in Fairfield (Wurundjeri land), Melbourne, this ambitious project is part of a two-home initiative that thoughtfully reimagines how increased housing density can coexist with a community’s character.
By focusing on creating individual identities for the homes, the project diverges from traditional subdivision models and enhances both liveability and sustainability.
Design Philosophy and Sustainable Living
Ben Callery Architects are known for their commitment to environmentally responsive and responsible design. Their approach in the Rathmines House incorporates passive solar design elements and active technology to achieve a minimum 7-star energy rating.
The design not only reduces energy consumption but also enhances the thermal comfort of the home, making it naturally warm in winter and cool in summer.
“North House and South House are like two siblings with shared values but distinct personalities. Both are designed around the same principles of passive solar design, using a central courtyard and high ceilings to provide warming winter sun and natural ventilation. But they each address the public realm in their own unique way. The homes’ interiors, designed by BuildHer Collective, R&Co Design Studio and Alison Lewis Interiors, maintain a careful balance between bold and muted elements.
A monochromatic palette, enriched by natural stone, warm timber, and subtle tiles, defines the project’s signature look. The fluidity between indoor and outdoor spaces emphasises freedom of movement, while dedicated outdoor rooms offer a retreat into nature, furthering the connection between the occupants and their surroundings.
Herbert Basin: Elevating Powder Room Design
At the heart of the powder room is the Herbert Basin in Powder Blue by Nood Co, which effortlessly enhances the calm and refined aesthetic of the space. The basin’s elegant curves and versatile design make it a perfect fit for both contemporary and classic interiors.
