Step into a space curated by Studio Shields, and you’ll experience more than just design - you’ll feel its essence. Every detail, from colour selection to texture pairing, is carefully considered to create environments that are both deeply personal and effortlessly refined. At the core of Studio Shields’ philosophy is the belief that great design tells a story. "Every project begins with a conversation," Ruby Shields explained. "We dive deep into understanding how our clients live, what they cherish, and the kind of atmosphere they want to create." This immersive approach ensures that each design is not only visually stunning but also rich in meaning and emotion.

Drawing Inspiration from the Unexpected

Inspiration for Ruby at Studio Shields can come from anywhere - an intricate façade, a striking fashion palette, or the understated beauty of a handmade ceramic. "I’m a bit of a collector when it comes to inspiration," Ruby shared. "It could be a uniquely shaped leaf found on a morning walk or the dynamic energy of a runway show. Everything informs the way I design."

The Power of Colour in Design

Colour plays a pivotal role in her work, though not always in expected ways. "People associate colour with boldness, but sometimes the softest shade makes the biggest impact," she notes. "It’s about how colour interacts with light, texture, and mood. Whether it’s a deep burgundy, a serene verdant green, or the perfect neutral, our goal is to bring spaces to life."

Ruby Shield’s Design Process: Blending Research with Intuition

Ruby Shield’s design process blends research with intuition. Each project starts with an exploratory phase - collecting references, sketching ideas, and defining the emotional atmosphere of a space. "Design is problem-solving combined with feeling," she explains. "We begin broadly and then refine until we reach something truly special. Sketching is our way of testing concepts and breathing life into narratives."

Collaboration and Craftsmanship in Every Project

Collaboration is key to her success, as she works closely with artisans, craftspeople, and suppliers who share their passion for quality and innovation. "The best designs are born from partnerships," she says. "There’s an undeniable magic in working with people who are deeply connected to their craft - it adds soul to the final product." A particularly memorable project involved revitalising a heritage-listed home, balancing its timeless charm with unexpected colour choices. "I’ll never forget the painter’s reaction," she recalled. "He looked at our palette and said, ‘This is a lot of colours!’ Then, after a pause, he nodded and added, ‘But these are good colours. Better than white.’ That’s what excites us - changing perceptions of colour."

Designing her home: A transformative Experience

Designing her own home was a transformative experience. "Initially, we planned for a neutral, market-friendly space," she admits. "But then we thought - why not create something that truly represents us?" The result is a home filled with warmth, texture, and meaning. "I wanted it to feel like a hug, where every corner tells a story. It’s moody, experimental, and authentically ours."

Commitment to Quality and Timeless Design

When selecting products, Ruby prioritises quality and integrity. "True design is an investment," she emphasises. "My father always told me, ‘Buy well now, so you don’t have to replace it later.’ That advice has stayed with me. We avoid replicas because they lack the craftsmanship of originals. Instead, we choose pieces that stand the test of time - ones that gain character as they age."

This commitment to quality is what drew her to Nood Co. "I love that they’re Australian-made, use locally sourced materials, and have sustainability at their core," she says. "And the colour range is incredible! The ability to customise lets us push creative boundaries and design something truly unique."
