Based in the coastal town of Ocean Grove, designer Kate Jeanes has built her practice around people. For her, the foundation of every project is understanding the lives lived within a space. “I love building relationships - my clients are at the centre of everything I do. Understanding how they live, work and want to feel in their home is paramount. I balance function, flow and aesthetics so a home becomes a true reflection of the people living in it, and a space they’ll love for years to come.”

Kate is recognised for creating homes that work hard for the people who live in them. “I want everything to flow and function so well that my clients feel instantly calm and relaxed when they walk through the door. Then we can add the beautiful layers. I also thrive on collaboration - working with clients and trades to turn what can be an overwhelming process into something simple and enjoyable.”

Her approach to specifying materials reflects both practicality and authenticity. “I’m a big believer in ‘you get what you pay for’ - something my Dad taught me early on. I favour natural, honest materials like stone and timber, but I’m also a realist. There’s a fine balance between quality and cost-effective solutions, and I always aim to find that sweet spot.”

Process is where Kate’s passion shines through. She begins every project by listening. “I always start by really listening and getting to know my clients - that understanding informs every decision and ensures the final design feels completely tailored to them. I’m a little old school and love nothing more than starting with a hand-drawn sketch; it’s often where my ideas first come to life. From there, I refine the concept through drawings, material selections and collaboration with trusted trades to ensure every detail is considered and beautifully executed.”

Her own home, designed with close friend MJS Built, embodies her design philosophy. “We built our home with a close friend, MJS Built, and collaborated closely on the design. There were plenty of sketches and folders of inspiration! I never tire of the facade, with its pitched rooflines, warm timbers and textured bagged brick. Being close to the beach, we wanted a home that was relaxed, family-friendly and welcoming - like a big warm hug for everyone who visits. I also love collecting special objects and art over time so that it truly reflects us.”

Inspiration comes from all corners of life - nature, fashion, designers and artists. This eclectic mix shapes spaces that are layered, personal and timeless. And while she puts her heart into every project, it’s those where trust is central that stand out. “The most rewarding projects are those where the client places their full trust in me and fully embraces the process. That’s when the true magic happens.”

When it comes to colour, Kate is an advocate for boldness. “I love colour! I’m glad people are becoming braver with it in their homes. I often use different shades of the same hue to create depth, and I’m especially drawn to colours inspired by nature - they always feel timeless and calming.”

And at the heart of many powder rooms she designs, you’ll often find a piece that brings everything together. “I love centering my designs around a hero piece - and in powder rooms, that’s often a Nood Co. vessel. The variety of designs and colours means they can be playful or refined, depending on the brief. And the fact that they’re hand-cast in Australia is always a big tick for me.”

For Kate, design is about more than creating beautiful spaces. It’s about connection, collaboration and crafting homes that feel as if they truly belong to the people who live in them.
