Located in Yarralumla, this full internal renovation by De’zin Studio was commissioned by a young family seeking a home that was bold, playful, and distinctly their own. The project transformed the kitchen, laundry, bathrooms, and living and dining areas, along with upgrades to windows and insulation to enhance comfort and efficiency.
Originally designed for a family of three, expanding to four during the project, the home carefully balances changing lifestyle needs with a clear and confident design vision.
The clients’ brief was clear but impactful: no white joinery, and a bold embrace of colour. At a time when neutral palettes dominated interior trends, this home challenged convention entirely. The result is a vibrant, personal space characterised by layered materials, careful detailing, and a joyful, expressive character.
The approach was contemporary and colour-forward, combining playful materials with practical family living. The kitchen layout was reconfigured to improve flow and connection with the living areas. The laundry was relocated to enhance daily usability, while bathroom layouts were refined to improve storage, circulation, and finish quality. Durability and longevity were key considerations. Natural materials were prioritised wherever possible, ensuring the home could withstand the demands of busy family life without compromising on style.
Collaborative workshops with the clients’ guided material and product selections, featuring bold colour choices that defined the palette. Terrazzo surfaces, terracotta tones, copper accents, textured tiles, and fluted glass were layered to create visual richness while staying practical. Sculptural Funl basins in Clay and Blush Pink from Nood Co. were integrated early in the process, reinforcing a cohesive and confident colour story throughout the home.
Originally designed in 2021, the construction was delayed as the family grew. Revisiting the project in 2024 confirmed the enduring strength of the original concept, requiring minimal adjustments. The process, from mood boards and colour exploration to detailed selections and construction, emphasised collaborating with skilled trades to ensure the design intent was fully realised.
Yarralumla House showcases the power of trust between client and designer. By embracing bold colours and expressive design, the project achieves a timeless vibrancy grounded in careful planning, materiality, and detailing. For De’zin Studio, it represents a confident, personal expression of design, a home that is as joyful to live in as it is visually compelling.
